The answer is approximately 48,500 hectolitres of wine!

Italian wine has been produced in the country for over 4,000 years. Why? For one, Italy provides one of the best and most well-suited climates for growing the types of grapes and varieties of grapes used to produce the finest wine in the world.

Blanketing statements like “Italian wine” work, but they aren’t always true. In Italy, for example, there are over 20 regions alone that attribute to the wine drinking pleasure worldwide. Despite similar types being produced in different regions, the wine in the northeast is very different tasting wine than wine grown in the southwestern regions.

Prosecco is actually not a type of grape, it is simply a type of wine. Typically, Prosecco is made from the grape type Glera that produces the fizzy, wonderful wine we enjoy with toasts, dessert, and really whenever we are craving a sweet wine.

It is no doubt, with nearly every region of Italy sequestered to producing their own types and brands of wine, that at this time there are currently 350 different varieties of wine being produced in Italy! From Chianti to Prosecco, there are more wines being produced in Italy than anywhere else in the world.
6. The oldest winery in Italy produces Chianti Classico
Castelnuovo Berardenga or Brolio Castle is the oldest winery in Italy. This winery was founded in the Middle Ages.
7. Quality control is incredibly high
When you are the world’s producer of wine, quality control is at an all-time high. In fact, two-thirds of the wine produced in the country has a DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) of 39% or IGP (Protected Geographical Information) 30%. Labels are keen on displaying their authenticity, and boundaries are strict!

This is a better-known secret, but the facts remain true. Pasta is the perfect match for a classic Italian red wine. With tomato, basil, and some parmesan and a hearty glass of red wine (or white for a white sauce), you can’t go wrong.
10. In 2016, over 225 million cases of Italian wine were exported
As we mentioned before, the demand for Italian wine is high! Over 225 million cases go out every year to The United States, Germany, and the UK primarily, but China is rapidly becoming a country that has Italian wine in high demand at the dinner table.
